There have been Trumpers in England as far back as early as 1253 (Adam Trumper of Essex (from P.H. Reaney's Dictionary of British Surnames (London 1958). A grant of arms was given to Trumper of Essex in 1439. Some of the Trumpers who came to England, briefly in 1708-9 and probably at other times, were "Poor Palatines" and did not emigrate to other continents. Some of them stayed in Ireland and probably in England. It is not known if we are in that group.

James Holmes Trumper was baptized 04 April 1819 at St. Luke, Chelsea, England. His parents were John and Mary Ann Trumper. James emigrated to Ontario, Canada probably when he was about 20 years old. He married Amelia Maria Lemen, 10 February 1844 in Camden Twp. They are shown in the 1851 census for Camden East Township on Lot 45, Con. 2, living on one acre. James' occupation was listed as a blacksmith. He applied for land on 24 November 1859 and received the west half of Lot 1, Con. 7 in Sheffield Twp. On the 1851 census it shows Mary Ann Trumper, widow, England (place of birth) living with them. I presume this to be James' mother.

James and Amelia had three children: Harriet, James Harvey, and Geo. Franklin Trumper who was my husband's grandfather. In the 1901 census George and his family are living in Napanee and in approximately 1909, they moved to Port Hope.
