Researching the PORTEOUS (PORTEUS) family worldwide. My ggrandmother, Mary Jane Porteous (10 Jun 1858-25 Feb 1922), d/o Nancy Black (1834:Ireland-1888:Camden Twp., Ont.) and Archabald Porteous (1819:Scotland-1886:Franktown, Ontario), was born there in Port Hope. The family appears to have moved to Richmond, Goulbourn, Carleton Co.shortly after Mary Jane's birth, as a brother (b: Oct/1859) and subsequent children were born there.
I am also the volunteer genealogy contact for the Porteous Associates and have some data on other families by that name in the area. Our group is glad to exchange detail with interested family researchers:

Thomas ASHBY (1811-?) came to Port Britian c1850. He married Mary Ann GUDGEON 1829 in England. She died on the trip and Thomas arrived with 4 children (Thomas, Charles, Harriett & Maria). All were married in the area; Charles Ashby (1841-1918) being my gggrandfather. He married Margaret GIBSON (1846-1950) in 1867. They moved to Pontypool and then to Havelock. They had three (plus 2 that died as infants) children: Thomas, Wilbert and Mary. Thomas moved to Peterborough while Wilbert and Mary stayed in Havelock.
Thomas Ashby - the first to arrive - appears to have remarried Frances RAGAN. They had a family of 6 (1851 census) including Charles.
I have done extensive work and have over 1500 names in the tree but my greatest missing links are proof that Frances and Thomas (above) are connected to my family and the date of the death of Thomas Ashby.

My ggrandfather was Alexander LEITH, recorded as having assisted passage to Prescott, Ontario with his brother, Thomas, in 1832. He married (I think) Lydia GERMAN (b1828, daughter of Christopher) and some of their children, including my grandmother, were born on the 9th Concession of Murray Twp. Alexander was a miller and a wanderer! What became of his brother, Thomas, I do not know. Alexander was born at 19 Prospect Street, Aberdeen, Scotland c1817-1819. I have not been able to find all of Alexander and Lydia's children, either. Any help would be appreciated.

My brothers and sisters are trying to locate our great grandparents for our mother's 75th birthday gift from us. She never knew them - it was never discussed when she was growing up.
My grandmother, Edith Mae TAYLOR (nee McCANN) seemed to have some controversy surrounding her birth. Edith's father was African American. We suspect that Edith was the illegitimate daughter of either one of the original sisters of the family (listed below) or a daughter of one of
the sisters. Edith was raised as one of the original family. There is 22 years age difference between the youngest child of the family and Edith. Here is some of the information that we have gathered to date:
The patriarch was Samuel McCann (1838-1917), buried at Oak Hill Cemetery. Their children were Mary Jane (b1867); Isabella (1868-1943), listed in the family bible as grandmother to Edith; John (1870-1891), shot by a neighbour; Thomas (b1871), married Amelia HOLMES; Betty Ann (b1875); Selena Dora (b1877), wife of Robert GARDINER; and Margaret (b11 Oct 1879), buried Perrytown Presbyterian cemetery.
Then comes Edith Mae (08 Dec 1901) rumoured to have been born in Bewdly and/or raised in Cobourg.
If anyone can assist us with this project it would be greatly appreciated.

Seeking information on (Findley) Harold BATTY of Port Hope (1882-1946), and the origins and descendants of the BATTY family of Haldimand Township, c1800-1961. F. Harold Batty worked as a printer for the Evening Guide. In Canada his family stretches back to Samuel and David Findley Batty, who settled in Lakeport, Haldimand Township, c1809. I have not been able to find their parents or where they were from, though it seems they came up from somewhere in the US, possibly of Irish descent. Samuel married Lucinda (surname unknown) and David F. Batty married Mary LOYST of South Fredericksburg. One of David's sons, (David) Calvin (Matthew) Batty, moved to Michigan in the mid-1800s and raised his family there, changing the surname to Beatty. Harold's mother, Melissa Batty, nee LENNOX, died in Colborne, Ontario -- near Lakeport -- in 1929. His father, (Findley) Lafayette Batty, predeceased her, but I have been unable to find any record of his death or burial. Harold's uncle, George W. Batty, was buried with his wife in Lakeport in 1935, and George's daughter, Bertha Lelia, was buried there in 1961, following her husband, Frederick C. MOORE. F. Harold Batty, who died 1946 in Port Hope, appears to be the last male of this Batty line in Canada. Leads on the Battys will be gratefully received!

My ggrandfather, Nathaniel POMEROY and his wife, Mary Ann (nee SAUNDERCOCK) came from Cornwall, UK to Port Hope about 1867 with two sons, Samuel (b1858) and my grandfather, William John (b1866). William J. married Elizabeth CROFT in PH in 1892. Her family was established in PH by this time and many are buried in Welcome Cemetery as are the Pomeroys. Samuel married Sarah Jane CHARTRAN and they had five children and lived for a time in PH. My father, Arthur Pomeroy, was the eldest of six children - Arthur, Albert, Olive, Laura, Effie and Helen - of William J. and Elizabeth. Elizabeth died in 1915 and in 1918 William J. married Catherine Christie. Arthur married my mother, Jean A. Compton of Kingston, after he returned from WWI service. He was wounded in France. I would love to trace ggf Nathaniel to their arrival in PH since they crossed the Atlantic twice: first in 1857/58 when Samuel was born in Wisconsin later returning to UK where William J. was born, then back again (1867) to be recorded in the PH census of 1871.

Daniel Smothergill (dsmothe1@twcny.rr.com)
My names are SOTHERGILL and SUTHERGILL. I know that both were in Ontario in the late 1800's. Both are spelling variants of my surname.
The earliest entries in the Kilmore Parish Registry (Church of Ireland, Belturbet) indicate that the original was Smothergill. I found no Sothergills, Southergills or Suthergills among the early entries. But as years progressed, some people whose names had been spelled Smothergill appear as Sothergill, Suthergill, or Southergill. And for some of them the spelling switches back later on. I wouldn't want to rule out any possibility of distinct Sothergill and Suthergill families, but the spelling for some individuals definitely varied over the years. The Thomas Sothergill who
appears in York East on the 1871 Census of Ontario is a good example. His father's name appears as Smothergill on the birth entry. Later his name becomes has Sothergill.
An interesting aspect to this is that the Smothergill spelling survived only among those that went to the Danish West Indies. Siblings that went to Connecticut mostly used Southergill; Sothergill to a lesser extent. But I've never found the Smothergill spelling in Connecticut. One woman born on St. Thomas and known all her life there as Smothergill became Southergill in
Connecticut on the 1900 Census.

So far we know of several families that either immigrated or lived in Port Hope. Family oral history has always claimed the town as where they came from before settling in IL: HAMLIN, SOMERS, POTTER, SMITH, GRANT and MERKLEY/MERCKLE.
The Smith connection is through Elias Smith's grandaughter, Catherine Potter Merkley Hamlin. She was married twice, first to Christopher Merkley then to Calvin Hamlin.

Came across James STEVENS on your web page and I suspect that he is somehow related to my g-g-grandfather, Adam STEVENS. The family came through Port Hope, but settled in Darlington. A copy of James' land petition states that he had 6 children by 1810. It's hard to believe they would all go back to the US of A.

Researching Rev. Jonathon and Isabel Julia (HARPER) SHORTT. My fourth ggrandfather was Lt.-Col. James Harper, R.E. (28 Dec 1787:Fife, Scot.-31 Dec 1837:Guernsey Isle). I believe his daughter, Isabel Julia, was born in England. Their first child, Rev. Wm. F.S. Harper is my direct ancestor, and he was born in England. Both he and Isabel came to Canada. Rev. Jonathon married Isabel at St. George's Church in Kingston 07 Aug 1850 while already serving at Port Hope. Isabel's brother, Rev. Harper, presided at their wedding. He was pastor at St. John's, Bath, a few miles away.
The Shortts had the following children that I know of: Emily Ann Mc Causeland Shortt, George (b1852), Isabel Zoe, John Alma, and Rev. Charles Shortt, who I believe was the son born to them 19 Oct 1854.
I would like to learn more about this family, and I am also hoping that someone descended from them may know what Isabel's mother's name was. They may have been married in South Cave, York, England. Of course, they moved around a lot since he was in the military.

I have, and am willing to share, information for the following families of Hope Township, combined counties of Northumberland-Durham, and some westward into Clarke Township and Bowmanville: SYMONS/ALLIN/PEARCE/RICKARD and little bits of WADE/ROWE/BOSNELL/MOORE/PHILP/HOLMES.
My father, Paul SYMONS, was born in Port Hope in 1921 and lived on a farm on Lot 13, Con. 3, a quarter-mile north of Welcome. A school marks the north end of the farm. His father, Reuel Clare Symons, died in a farming accident in 1929, so they had to sell the farm and move to live with his mom's dad, Rev. W.A. BUNNER (a Methodist minister at Welcome from about 1917 to 1921) in Bowmanville. I have an impressive family tree developed and I am trying to fill it in a bit more, with the help of Don Moore who was born in Port Hope in 1943.
My grandma is Muriel Symons HARDING. She married second husband Rev. AW Harding in 1957.

My ancestor, Isaac VANORDER, was in Port Hope from 1836-1839 (shows on the census records for those two years) and was originally of the Kingston Vanorders, U.E. Isaac was the 3rd son to Isaiah Vanorder & Ann Mcguin Vanorder who had been granted land in Clarke Twp.in 1797 but sold it in 1833. While they, and brothers, remained in Kingston, Isaac moved away. The name changed to "Vanidour". Should you find any other records regarding him or his wife's family, HOWE, please contact me.

Undertaking research for my Step-Father, Edmund (Ted) Slack of Northumberland, England, who has lost contact with relations who emigrated to Canada and lived in Port Hope in the early part of the 20th Century - around WWI time I believe. Mr. Slack was a miner in the Dudley, Ashington and various other coal pits in Northumberland until his retirement after the miners strike of the 1980's. He is very keen to contact his relations.
The name of the original émigré was Cybil SLACK. She married a Ken SIMPSON. I believe at one time they ran or worked on a chicken farm and then they became fruit pickers. They had two sons, names unknown and Mr Slack met one of them very briefly during WWII when he was stationed nearby in the UK - purely by chance I believe.
Obviously the 'Slack' name will not be in evidence but is there any way anyone can assist in me trying to track any 'Simpsons' who may be on this particular lien or indeed, ascertaining if Cybil (Slack) or Ken Simpson are still alive.
