On the reverse of this photograph is the notation:
     (Nipper) J. Carson, little drummer, then 11 years old
     46th Batt. Band 1869
     Taken in 1869 on common south east of viaduct

It also bears the name 'John Carson' and is imprinted with 'M. Carson, Port Hope'.

According to CemSearch, John Carson died at his Hope township residence on 16 Dec 1937 at the age of 81. He was the husband of Elizabeth Neville (1865-1933).
